FOCUS DAY 7:
HEAVENLY CONVERSATION 7: “Believing AND Obeying"
KEY:F (God the Father Speaking);J (God the Son, Jesus Speaking); S (God the Holy Spirit Speaking) [Read the verse(s) and “Heavenly Conversation” as a family. Suggestion: Choose a different family member to read each part of God’s conversation.
F “Christmas is about faith! We are the only true God. The first challenge of faith is to choose to believe only in us.”
J “A second challenge is to believe we have inspired TRUTH in the Bible, or our written Word. I am the living Word!”
S “Don’t you think that another challenge would be their choices to obey the TRUTHS we share in our Word?”
F “Yes, and there are many other challenges as well.”
J “So far we have shared that ‘Life is a Gift’, that they were ‘Created to Love and be Loved’, and that we have given them the ‘Three Gifts of Christmas’ – forgiveness, freedom, and fulfillment.”
S “We have also reminded them that that they have ‘a will’, that they must responsibly ‘Decide’ how they live, and that those choices make up their ‘Life’s Story’.”
F “We have also shared that Christmas is about ‘Love’ and ‘Hope’. Now they need to face another challenge – the importance of having Faith in us. Faith requires trusting, and proof of trusting is found in each obedient choice.”
J “That’s a lot to remember. What faith choices have we asked them to make so far in our ADVENT celebration?”
S “We have encouraged six choices – all requiring faith!
DAY 1: I Will Value God’s Gift of Life in Every Choice;
DAY 2: I Will Acknowledge God’s Love Images in Me;
DAY 3: I believe in Jesus’ Birth, Death, and Presence;
DAY 4: I accept my sovereignty to choose TRUTH;
DAY 5: I will make Christ’s Love the center of my life; and
DAY 6: I will put my hope in God over myself.”
F “Today we add perhaps the toughest challenge so far:
DAY 7: I will obey the TRUTHS I know.”
J “David wrote, ‘Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.’ and ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. I have sworn, and have confirmed it, that I will obey your righteous ordinances.’ [Ps 119:11, 105-6]. It seems simple - before they can faithfully obey, they must first know what TRUTH is.”
F “That helps. At Christmas we use lights, stars, and candles to remind everyone that TRUTH overcomes lies and darkness. They will need our light to conquer LIES.”
S “So let me understand. We are saying that perhaps the greatest challenge for any believer is not just knowing TRUTH, but following it? - to walk in the light by faith?”
F “Right. What good does it do you to have a flashlight and not turn it on? Or worse, not walk in the light it provides? Believers need faith to walk in the TRUTHS they do know and understand. They need to trust all of our Words.”
J “Christmas gives me a chance to know each believer personally, and since I am ‘TRUTH’, the more they get to know me, the easier it will be to obey what they know.”
S “So you really are a Christmas gift in many ways, Jesus!”
John 14:21; James 1:22; Psalms 119:11, 105-6“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”; “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” John 14:21; James 1:22
MY CHOICE DAY 7:
I will obey the TRUTHS I know.
DAY 7 ACTIVITY:
OPTIONAL: HAVE A CHRISTMAS ‘LIGHT WALK’
Use your Christmas lights to put your faith into action. FAITH AND OBEDIENCE LIGHT WALK: 1) Begin by discovering how many Christmas candles can you find. Also, how many light strings are on your Christmas tree? How many other Christmas lights do you have placed around your home? 2) Next, memorize “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” and/or “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. I have sworn, and have confirmed it, that I will obey your righteous ordinances.” [Ps 119:11, 105-6]. 3) Then, walk to each candle and/or light (personally or as a family) and quote David’s words. 4) Finally, say a short prayer (each one or as a family) to encourage knowing and obeying God’s truths, like, “God help me to know your Word.”, or “Jesus, show me that obedience is a way to love you.” Be creative. During the rest of Advent, use lights to remind you to obey TRUTHS that you already know in faith, and to seek to know more. [That is, “Walk in the Light” you have by faith.]
