FOCUS DAY 12:

Life has Meaning

HEAVENLY CONVERSATION 3: “Vocation is more than a job."

KEY: F (God the Father Speaking);J (God the Son, Jesus Speaking); S (God the Holy Spirit Speaking) [Read the verse(s) and “Heavenly Conversation” as a family. Suggestion: Choose a different family member to read each part of God’s conversation.]

F “Christmas is about purpose! Every soul we create has our gift of a vocation. This is more than just a job or career; it includes a calling to first love us, then themselves, and then others. Everyone has a special purpose for their lives – plus, everyone is sent to love!”

J “At Christmas we celebrate our gifts of love to help each person discover and fulfill their unique purpose.”

S “Paul urged believers to ‘… walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.”

FPaul was right! Vocation is a God-the-Father image, and part of people’s life-motivational dimension (pneuma, spiritual). I want our love to empower every vocation.”

J “Satan lies about our love-image of vocation. He tells people ‘life has no meaning’, or ‘they cannot accomplish anything of value’, or worse yet, that ‘they are failures.’”

S “We want believers to understand that our love can link their vocation with their calling. Even if their work and calling seem different, they can still have fulfillment, joy, peace, and purpose if they are obedient to our calling. We are interested in everything they do!”

FThey do not have to please others to have purpose, just me. I already created them with value. Pleasing me with their life’s work brings glory to all of us, and allows them to find enjoyment in the vocation(s) they follow.”

J “To society, a person’s value often comes from their accomplishments, position, or job status, but we see a greater value in relationships – we want to know them.”

S “Because she obeyed us, we arranged for Jochebed to get paid for raising her son, Moses. Neat trick, huh?”

FPaul remained a tent-maker throughout his three callings as an evangelist, apostle, and church planter.”

J “Peter was called from being a ‘fisherman’ to become a ‘fisher of men’. He used his same passions in each career.”

S “A calling can bring more satisfaction and reward than pay, power, or position, but they can all be present, too.”

FThe important thing is that they love us, others, and themselves in whatever they do with their life stories.”

J “Yes. Everyone is called and sent to love and be holy.”

S “We call everyone to be a servant. I remember what you said while with Mark, ‘… whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’ [Mark 10:43-5]”

FEvery time someone serves another in love, and reflects our love in their lives, they fulfill their highest purpose.”

J “Father, I intentionally obeyed your call to serve others.”

S “I faithfully serve others daily with your love, Father.”

FLet’s pray that this Christmas believers will be filled with purpose. As they serve others, may they see how that brings glory to us. I want everyone to talk with us daily about their vocation(s) in their life stories.”

S “When they pray, I will gently speak to their hearts.”
